Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs)
Every vessel, including paddlecraft, must have a U.S. Coast Guard-approved wearable PFD of the appropriate size for each person on board. Children 12 years of age and younger must wear a PFD while on the open deck of any vessel.
Vessel Registration
Non-motorized kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards are generally exempt from registration in Tennessee, unless they are equipped with any mechanical propulsion. If a paddlecraft has any form of motor, it must be registered with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA).
Boater Education
While not specifically required for operating non-motorized paddlecraft, boater education is mandatory for anyone born after January 1, 1989, to operate a motorized vessel on Tennessee waters. Understanding basic boating safety principles is always recommended for all paddlers.
Fishing License
Anyone aged 13 or older wishing to fish from a kayak, canoe, or SUP on Tennessee waters must possess a valid Tennessee fishing license. Licenses are available for residents and non-residents, with various options for duration.
Age Requirements for Rentals/Operation
Outfitters often have their own age requirements for renting paddlecraft or participating in guided trips, typically requiring participants to be at least 18 years old or accompanied by a parent/guardian. Verify with the specific outfitter before booking.
