Common questions

Match the gear to the water temperature, not the air. Above about 60°F water, a neoprene wetsuit (a 3mm Farmer John is the paddling standard) is usually enough. Between roughly 45–60°F, step up to a thick full wetsuit or a semi-dry suit. Below about 55–60°F, and for any cold-water paddling where a capsize could leave you swimming, a true drysuit is the safest choice because it keeps you completely dry and lets you layer for warmth underneath. When air and water temperatures are far apart, always dress for the water.

The paddle stroke is all shoulders and arms, and full-sleeve neoprene fatigues them fast. A sleeveless Farmer John (or the paddling-cut full suits with high armholes and stretch shoulders) keeps your core warm while leaving your arms free, so you can paddle for hours. It also layers easily, throw a paddling jacket or drytop over it as conditions change. That's why brands like NRS build John-style suits specifically for boaters.

For warm water and summer paddling, a 2mm springsuit or thin neoprene layer is plenty. A 3mm Farmer John is the versatile three-season workhorse for water in the mid-50s to low-70s Fahrenheit. A drysuit provides no insulation on its own, it's a waterproof shell.
